piñata bay area book sloth emile klein

In 2013 a mutual friend introduced me to the author Dave Eggars, who was interested in some bear painting lessons. Dave introduced me to Brian McMullin, who oversaw McSweeney’s Children’s books. When I told Brian I’d made a few piñatas he asked, “how big?” He was prepping for the release of J. Otto Seibold’s Lost Sloth.

The conversation resulted in a lasting friendship, and a commission for a 10’ long sloth piñata, plus custom toys and goodies designed around the themes of the book. I build the sloth inside a friend’s hanger in the Dog-patch, and made the toys and cookies in berkeley. Sweetheart Brian Kenny screen-printed the hats and coasters.
